When social media campaigns go wrong…

Recently I have been thinking about social media and how it has become one of the most important tools in a marketer’s arsenal for mass communication.

It is a great way to strengthen brand image and foster consumer engagement but due to the unpredictable nature of this medium, social media campaigns should be developed with care and considered from every angle.

Much to my amusement (and sometimes horror), a few well-known brands have produced some seriously ill-conceived campaigns. The infographic below shows the biggest social media fails of 2012 with some great words of advice so I just had to share it.

If this teaches us anything it is that no-one is infallible when it comes to social media. While I am totally mystified as to how anyone could think some of these were a good idea, I understand that we all make mistakes and I guess the important thing is learning from them.

Remember, when you communicate via social media you are sending a message about your brand and starting a conversation that the entire world can participate in.  Think carefully about what you would like to be said…
